German Longhaired Pointers History

1850 engraving of German Longhaired Pointer hunting

Der Deutsch Langhaar Jagdgebrauchshund evolved from the long coated Spanish Falcon Dog ( espaignolz), the Stober ( rummage) dog and Brackens which were scent hounds. They were used for hunting all types of game for foresters who named them Der Deutsch Langsam ( the slow dog). In the 1800's when shooting replaced netting, Scottish Setters were exported to the Germanic states where they known as Der Wildhhuter Hundes or Gamekeeper dogs .These bloodlines were introduced to create more speed and better air scenting ability but too much was added and they began to lose retrieving skills, their keenness and the willingness to please. Owners agreed to breed a brown longhaired dog of greater versatility which retained all of its Germanic qualities and a small infusion of English field specialist skills. What they achieved by the 1870's was "German Marmalade with a little English Sauce". Today The Deutsch Langhaar Club members continue to reproduce a quality dog for hunting and tracking deer, wild boar and fur, quartering and pointing all game birds and as an excellent retriever from land and water. These abilities are combined with good conformation, bid ability and a willingness to please. The breed is governed by a strict breed master system and this has a proven track record because looks and ability remain unchanged since their standard was written in 1879.
